Based on the 1939 novel by Rumer Godden, the film revolves around the growing tensions within a small convent of Anglican nuns who are trying to establish a school and hospital in the old palace of an Indian Raja at the top of an isolated mountain above a fertile valley in the Himalayas.
Black Narcissus uses suspense, subtle eroticism, and even elements of horror to tell a fairly complex story, but the historical context may be lost on modern viewers.
Is Black Narcissus streaming on Netflix? Sadly, this one is not available on Netflix. It's an FX limited series, but there a few other places to watch it other than FX if you're interested. The 2020 adaptation produced by FX and the BBC is also available for streaming on BBC One in the UK, and on Hulu in the US.
The drama is a co-production between the BBC and FX. Alessandro Nivola and Gemma Arterton star in the series, with Amanda Coe writing the screenplay and Charlotte Bruus Christensen directing all three episodes. Set in the fictional palace of Mopu in the Himalayan mountains, Black Narcissus sees Gemma Arterton as Sister Clodagh, a nun sent to establish a school and hospital on an isolated mountain with the rest of her missionaries.
An enraged Sister Ruth rushed back to the convent and tried to push Sister Clodagh off the top of the bell tower, only for Clodagh to pull her back to safety. With one final look back at Clodagh, Sister Ruth let herself fall from the tower to her death.
The Mopu Palace is a fictitious location — with no real-life equivalents to match. To recreate the strange, twisted atmosphere described in the book, the creators opted to shoot scenes in the Jomsom municipality of Nepal, and the Pinewood Studios in Iver, U.K.
The simmering sexual tension between Sister Clodagh and Mr Dean ranks up yet another notch in episode three of Black Narcissus – but sadly it's not to be. In one of the final scenes, Sister Clodagh, who is taking her leave of the palace along with the other nuns, tells Mr Dean she cannot be with him “in this life”.
The film was shot at Pinewood, apart from the hillside gardens for which they used the arboretum of an old retired colonial army officer, at Leonardslea in West Sussex.
This first look at the series seems to be setting up a lot more horror than there was in the original feature. “Black Narcissus” isn't necessarily about ghosts, but more so the fears and horrors of repressed sexuality and the past. Don't let the plucked strings of the score fool you, this isn't a haunted house film.
Ruth dies and the nuns leave Mopu
In an explosive climax, Ruth tried to push Clodagh off the edge of the bell tower, sending them both nearly over the edge. Clodagh saved them but Ruth made a second attempt at her fellow nun's life before taking her own life in a scene mirroring what happened to Srimati.

Clodagh (Deborah Kerr), a newly promoted Sister Superior, is attempting to forget a failed romance that occurred before she took her vows.
With very little patience for children, more than a little bit racist, and craving power, Sister Ruth is causing friction among the sister. Not least with Sister Clodagh, whom she clashes with at such frequency she ended up getting slapped in the face.
The raciest off-screen drama - bar nun! The BBC's erotically charged remake of Black Narcissus is winning rave reviews - but the original classic was a TRUE-LIFE hotbed of illicit passion.
