In the cup, Uganda's washed coffees bring satiny body and ripe stone fruit tones, along with a delicate touch of red berry and a buttery finish. The best natural coffees feature a lush dark berry jam flavor and mouthfeel, and clean nougat-like mid tones.
Size grading: The cleaned coffee then passes to a grader, which often consists of a box fitted with screens of various sizes in descending order. The larger beans are retained on the required screen and pass to a lateral exit.
Ugandan coffee is grown in five areas of Uganda: the Central, Western, South-Western, Northern and Eastern regions. The Western region is known to produce the highest quality coffee.
The resulting clean dry coffee beans are in both cases referred to as FAQ (Fair Average Quality).
Pulping the berries
To pulp berries means to separate the beans from the pulp and skin. Pulping can be done by hand with a pestle, which breaks the skin and pulp, or with pulping machines.

Arabica, Robusta, Bugisu
The most widely grown bean in Uganda is Robusta, which 80% of all coffee grown in the country consists of. Uganda's Arabica beans count for the remaining 20%, the varietals being Typica, Kent, SL 14, and SL 28.

Uganda Coffee Overview
When most people think of major coffee producing countries, they don't think of Uganda. However, coffee makes up nearly 30% of Uganda's annual foreign trade earnings. The country actually is one of the birthplaces of Robusta coffee but has become a major producer of quality Arabicas.
Uganda produces two types of coffee (Robusta and Arabica) in a ratio of 4:1. For Robusta, there are two varieties, Nganda and Erecta.
Traditionally, farmers plant 450 trees in an acre of coffee, however, according to Joseph Nkandu, a coffee farmer in Mpigi and researcher on coffee, an acre can accommodate as many as 1,300 coffee trees.

Robusta is a robust shrub or small tree that grows up to 10 metres high. The fruits are rounded and take up to 11 months to mature; the seeds are oval in shape and smaller than Arabica seeds.
